Once we reached the top of the tram, imagine our surprise when we discovered that they were having an "Alpine Horn Festival".
How beautiful the horns sounded in the mountains! What an added blessing to our adventure. We took the short hike to the top of the Mannlichen (left) for sweeping views of the Bernese Oberland.
After a picnic, we took the longer Swiss hike from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg.
This was a fairly easy hike with beautiful views (right) of the North face of the Eiger, Jungfrau and the town of Grindelwald.
We ended up in the small hamlet of Kleine Scheidegg....which is the stop for the special train to the Jungfraujoch.
This is the highest train station in Europe and built on a glacier. It is in the picture above on the ridge between the 2 snow covered peaks....Eiger, left and Jungfrau, right.
This trip is very expensive, so make sure it is a clear day when you go.
You can then take the train from Kleine Scheidegg or do more hiking if you prefer!
There are many other side trips you can take on your Switzerland Vacations. Check my Lauterbrunnen and Murren pages for more ideas and information on this absolutely gorgeous area of Switzerland.
The larger town of Interlachen is not far from Wengen (a change of trains in Lauterbrunnen). This is where the main Swiss Rail train station is located.
You might be interested in Apartment or Villa Rentals if you are staying for a week or it is a Switzerland Family Holiday.
You will find the rates here quite high, because it is considered a "Mountain Resort". So check out Lauterbrunnen for lower rates.
Wengen Ski
This area is very popular for Ski Holidays Switzerland. You will find 45 lifts and the world famous Lauberhorn descent.
There is the Mannlichen-Kleine Scheidegg & Eiger Glacier areas for excellent skiing in Switzerland. In January, the town hosts the International Ski Race...part of the "World Cup-Race".
There is also snow boarding, toboggan runs, and ice skating in winter for your family to enjoy.
