Lauterbrunnen Switzerland is one of my favorite Memorable Getaways. We took our two daughters here for a Family Travel Europe Vacation.
We based ourselves in this breathtakingly beautiful valley for one week.
What a perfect place for great Switzerland Summer Holidays. This is one of the best places to visit in Switzerland.
As you can see from theses pictures of Switzerland, this area has a picture perfect setting. The steep Limestone cliffs surrounding the valley, awesome Staubbach Waterfall, seen and heard throughout this long narrow town and the spectacular mountain views make for a awesome setting.
I also like the fact that this has more of a "small town" feel than many of the other spots in the Bernese Oberland.
Switzerland Vacation Rentals
We rented one of the Switzerland Apartments here......a 2 bedroom with living room and kitchen.
This is a great set up for Family Holidays in Switzerland:
Lots of space for everyone
Ability to cook meals and save money
Great spot to relax and enjoy the fantastic scenery
There are also some Lauterbrunnen Hotels that would be an excellent option for your time in Switzerland.
Swiss Rail Pass
We purchased a Swiss Pass which you must do before you arrive in Switzerland. There is also a Swiss Family Card which is a great deal if you are traveling with children.
We flew into Zurich and then took the Switzerland Train to Lauterbrunnen, where we stayed. We used the pass.....which includes trains, buses and boats....to take day trips.
This was the first time our family had not rented a car for a Europe Family Holiday. It was so relaxing to sit back and just enjoy the scenery.
Swiss Rail Travel is very efficient....on time to the second! This is a great way to travel in Switzerland. You can get almost anywhere using these three modes of transportation. This is a great adventure for the kids, also.

Day Trips
There are many day trips to take from this area. A few of them that we did were:
We also did some Hiking in Switzerland. There are numerous Switzerland hikes from which to choose. For many of them you can take the chair lift or tram up and hike down part or all of the way.
The scenery in this area is fabulous and paths are good...you see many people hiking, young and old. There is a mix of easy and difficult hikes, so something for everyone. Here are some that we did:
Cable car to Brutschalp, train to Murren, then hiked back to Brutschalp and cable car back to Lauterbrunnen
Murren to Gimmelwald
Wengen chair lift to Mannlichen, then hiked to Kleine Scheidegg
Part of the way down the Lauterbrunnen Valley toward Stechelberg
Train to Grindelwald and hike to Glacier Gorge
Other Ideas and Activities
Trummelbachfalle - a waterfall inside a mountain
Picnics - every day we got DELICIOUS Gruyère cheese from the Cheese Shop, Salami from the Meat Market and bread from the Bakery and headed out for a picnic
Shopping in Interlachen
Local Specialties - try the Rosti or Raclette for dinner at local restaurants
Outdoor Cafes - Have coffee or lunch with a Spectacular view!
Just thinking about this Memorable Getaway makes me want to return to this awesome area.
